When you start pole dancing you usually have a wish list in your head of the moves you want to achieve. For some it’s a beautiful flat jade spilt, for others it may be just a simple invert. Mine was an aerial deadlift, I was aiming very high right from the start, and needless to say it’s taken me years to get my dream move. Along the way there have been many milestone pole moves that have marked a new phase of movement conquered and opened new avenues of learning. One of the great things about pole dancing is that you never stop learning, there’s so many facets to the sport. There’s always new moves being created, new combos to try, new dance elements to work on, handstands, flexibility. As pole dancers we’ll never be bored or lack inspiration from our community.
No, we’re not all strippers. But so what if we were? Would that somehow make you value us less as human beings? Would you look down on us, pity us, try to save us from the big bad world? Would you assume we were damaged goods? Would you assume we're uneducated? Would you value our opinions less? Would you look down your nose at us? Would you not want us in your circle of friends? Would you keep your boyfriends, partners, husbands away from us? Would you smile to our face and snigger behind our backs and thank the almighty lord above that we aren't your children? Would you assume our parents hadn't raised us properly? Would you be embarrassed if we were your children?
Watch any kind of dance, gymnastics or cirque performance and you'll notice they all have one thing in common. The performers all have the most gorgeous, gloriously straight legs and pointed feet and toes. There's something about beautifully pointed toes that make everything look better, more polished and professional. Even unprofessional and frankly sometimes quite untalented dancers like myself can make their movements look more graceful and elegant simply by extending their limbs and pointing their toes.
Let's talk knee pads. Floor work has a major role to play in pole dancing and there's a lot of knee action involved with this. We slide on them, pivot on them, drop on to them again and again and again. Thus making the humble knee pad an essential tool for all pole dancers if you want to avoid some serious pain and bruising during classes, training and pole competitions. Not all knee pads suit all purposes when it comes to pole, so let's take a close up look and make sure you're getting the right knee pads for the job at hand.
